All Saints Day and Day of the Dead

All over Peru, residents visit cemeteries carrying floral crowns to “visit” their dead and clean their tombstones. Later they share food and drink with the “souls.” This rite is the continuation of a pre-Hispanic practice combined with Christian customs. Those who have lost a child give children (resembling their own lost child) rolls and sweets in bags called “angelitos” (little angels). That night, families hold a wake at the cemetery, lit with candles until dawn of day 2.

Festival Date: From 1 to November 2, 2015
