.An off-the-beaten track tour to the circular agricultural terraces of Moray with their complex system of irrigation and terraces believed to have been an “Inca Greenhouse” as well as the ancient saltworks of Salineras, still being farmed today using ancient techniques. A great addition to your trip!

Pick Up Time from your hotel in Cusco: 8.30am
We travel out of Cusco in our private transportation until the village of Maras.
Maras is a nice little town that still keeps a good part of its architectural colonial beauty. You can see amazing facades made of thin stone, lintels with sculptures in bas-relief.
Moray ruins located at 3,450 m.a.s.l. we find the agricultural terraces of Moray with their complex system of irrigation and terraces. These terraces served as a natural green house to grow an extraordinary variety of crops at an altitude that they would typically only grow in the tropical Andes. It has also been suggested that they had a cosmological meaning.
Salineras “Trabajos de Sal” which consist of 3,000 small pools roughly 5 square meters (53.8 ft²) in size. Every three days, during the dry season, workers fill the pools with salt water that comes from natural springs at the top of the Maras complex, and when the water evaporates from the pool the salt is left for collection. This process is carried out over a one month period until the pools reach an approximate volume of solid salt that is 10 centimeters (4 inches) in height. The salt is ground up, treated with iodine, and packaged and sent to the various markets of the region.
Note: There is a short walk from Salineras of approximately 40 minutes back to where our transport is waiting to return to Cusco. It is a downhill picturesque walk.
We can include a visit to the town of Chincheros if time permits and you have not done it on the Sacred valley tour..
